Today marks the first day of school for my bigger kids, but more importantly, the beginning of an era for my soon-to-be fourteen year old. He will stand where I stood twenty years ago – not at the same school, but at the same stage of his life – and it is exciting and scary for both of us.
I hope this day marks the beginning of a time that he can look back on with more good memories than bad, that today (or some day very soon) he will meet that one friend that he will still have a relationship with twenty years from now, and that he doesn’t feel too lost – today and for the next four years.
For these years will undoubtedly shape him into the man he will become, I hope that he lives them outwardly and takes advantage of every opportunity that is presented to him, that he accepts his wins with grace, realizes that with those wins will also come loss and doesn’t let those losses beat him, and that we both learn from the mistakes that we will definitely make.
I hope he remembers that it’s ok to still hug his mom.
